At Micro Paradox, our passion for plant propagation goes hand in hand with our commitment to innovation. We take pride in tackling challenging, hard-to-propagate species—plants that are notoriously difficult to grow but highly valued for their unique qualities. Our research and development (R&D) process is at the heart of this mission, allowing us to bring new plant varieties to market and expand the horizons of modern agriculture and horticulture.
Why Hard-to-Propagate Species?
Some plant species resist traditional propagation methods due to factors like low germination rates, complex rooting requirements, or sensitivity to environmental conditions. However, these same species often have unique traits, from disease resistance to high-value aesthetics, that make them sought after by breeders, growers, and landscapers. By focusing on these plants, we’re able to provide solutions for nurseries and breeders who want to introduce them on a commercial scale.
Our R&D Process: A Blend of Science and Art
Every hard-to-propagate species presents its own set of challenges, and our R&D process reflects that. We start by studying the biology of each plant, carefully analyzing its growth patterns and environmental needs. Using our state-of-the-art tissue culture facility, we can then run trials to develop the right protocols for each stage of growth, from initiation to rooting and acclimation.
This process often involves trial and error, with adjustments made over months to refine media composition, adjust environmental factors, and address unexpected hurdles. For example, our current work on avocado and other high-value crops has required detailed studies on rooting protocols, growth rates, and tissue culture adjustments to maximize health and viability.
R&D in Action: Recent Projects
One of our recent successes is with avocado rootstock, where we’ve applied in vitro techniques to improve multiplication rates and establish consistent rooting protocols. Another example is our work with grapevine embryo rescue, which involves rescuing embryos from berries, cultivating them in vitro, and ultimately returning healthy plants to breeders. Each of these projects reflects our dedication to producing reliable, high-quality plants that meet industry needs.
Advancing Plant Science
Through our R&D efforts, we’re pushing the limits of plant science, opening up new opportunities for breeders, growers, and the industry as a whole. By refining propagation techniques and developing protocols for hard-to-grow plants, we’re setting new standards for quality and consistency in plant production.
