Our Clean Plant Projects: Virus Eradication for Grape, Cherry, and More

Micro Paradox Staff
November 28, 2024

At Micro Paradox, we’re committed to providing nurseries and breeders with high-quality, disease-free plant material that supports healthy, resilient crops. One of the ways we achieve this is through our clean plant projects, a specialized service focused on virus eradication. By ensuring that plants are free of harmful pathogens, we help breeders introduce new varieties and maintain existing stock with confidence. Here’s an inside look at what goes into these essential projects.

Why Clean Plants Matter

Healthy plants are the foundation of any successful nursery or agricultural operation. However, viruses and other pathogens can easily spread, threatening entire crops and reducing yields. Virus-free plants are especially important for high-value crops like grape, cherry, and other tree fruits, where even a minor pathogen can lead to significant losses. By providing clean plants, we’re helping breeders and nurseries protect their investments and ensure the quality of their stock.

Our Process: From Diseased Plant to Pathogen-Free Material

Each clean plant project begins with receiving a plant—often as a live plant or dormant stick, as is common with grapevines and cherry varieties—from a breeder or grower. These plants are typically infected or at risk of infection, so our first step is to thoroughly assess their health status. We work closely with CSP Labs to test each plant, identifying the specific pathogens that need to be addressed. Once we understand what we’re dealing with, the plant enters our lab for treatment.

Our team uses a combination of in vitro techniques, including meristem culture, antiviral treatments, and heat therapy, to eliminate viruses from the plants. These processes require a high level of precision and expertise, as each species and pathogen responds differently to treatment. By isolating the plant’s meristem—the tiny region at the shoot tip where cells divide—we can often remove viruses without compromising the plant’s health.

A Rigorous Path to Virus-Free Status

After the initial treatment, we rigorously screen each plant on output from the lab to confirm that it is free from the target pathogens. Once cleared, the plant is acclimated in our greenhouse, where it continues to grow in real-world conditions. After a period in the greenhouse, we screen the plant once again to confirm its virus-free status. This two-step testing process ensures that each plant is robust, healthy, and truly ready for commercial use.

The result is a clean, healthy plant that breeders can confidently propagate and distribute. These projects not only safeguard the breeder’s material but also contribute to the larger goal of introducing healthy, disease-resistant crops into the market.

Supporting Breeders with Elite Propagation and Global Distribution Services

Our virus eradication services go hand in hand with our elite stock propagation and material distribution services. By maintaining clean, disease-free plants in our tissue culture facility, we provide breeders with a reliable source of high-quality material for further propagation and distribution to export markets. This is particularly valuable for breeders working with proprietary or rare varieties, who need a dependable partner to ensure their plants remain healthy, productive, and ready for international demand.

A Commitment to Plant Health

Our clean plant projects are one of the many ways Micro Paradox is contributing to a healthier, more sustainable agriculture industry. By eradicating viruses and other pathogens, we’re helping breeders and growers protect their crops and build a stronger foundation for future growth. Whether it’s grape, cherry, or another specialty crop, our team is dedicated to supporting plant health from the ground up.

Stay tuned as we continue to expand our clean plant services and work with breeders to bring healthy, innovative varieties to the market.
